Professional Advice for Personal Caregiving Questions

Question:

Palliative Care

My mom is demented at 84 and has had a couple of bouts with pneumonia. She has also had some moles that even though they have been treated are now found to have metastisized and spread to her lung and kidneys.

One of the nurses has briefly recommended palliative care for my mom. I gather that means treating the symptoms as opposed to the disease itself.

Is that understanding accurate? I'm not sure what even to ask, what I should be considering?
